Victoria Powers

GENERAL
NAME: Victoria Grace Powers
NICKNAMES: Vic, Rory, Tori. Prefers Rory, though.
AGE/DOB: 16 | June 5
BLOOD STATUS: Half blood.
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female | She/her
SEXUALITY: Straight
HOMETOWN: Phoenix, AZ
CONCEPT: Nerdy, strong-willed bookworm with a penchant for mischeif.
PHYSICAL
APPEARANCE: Victoria isn't a fashionista, but she does have fashion. Her uniform is normal, but her street clothes have flare. She likes to dress in comfy sweaters and jeans when it's cool out, feeling cosy when she curls up with a book. In warmer days she sports t-shirts or tank tops and shorts. Rarely will you see her wearing dresses, though. Unless it's a special occasion or date, she probably won't bother being dressy. Like her sister, she likes looking good but she doesn't exactly put much effort into it to show that.
HEIGHT: 5'4
PB: Lily Collins
PERSONALITY
LIKES: spicy foods, healthy debates, books, snooping, talking with Vee, being with friends, her monster cat Arlo, doing something silly just for the sake of being silly, rain, studying.
DISLIKES: shallow people, unhealthy debates, blowouts with Vee, being caught, judgemental assholes, boredom, Arlo hogging the bed.
PERSONALITY:
Both Powers girls hold a certain Je ne sais quoi. Vee, the brilliant shining star, and Rory the refined and quiet little bookworm. Both girls are capable of dazzling those around them, but for the most part, Rory tends to stick to the shadows until she's comfortable. The shell she put around herself isn't impenetrable, just selective. You have to earn her trust before she opens up. Her first year in both Ilvermorny and Gooseberry were spent quiet and alone, outside of spending time with her sister and cabin mates.
Around family and friends, Rory laughs and teases. She plays with them, often trying to sway them to her bidding or talk them into what they truly desire in their hearts. It's manipulative, but never malicious, curiosity leading her to wonder what choice they'll make and what the outcome will be. Often Vee and Oz are the receptors to this behavior, but she's not above unleashing it on her cabin mates, family, or those she's curious about. Outside of her trusted confidants, Rory is a little more malicious with this kind of curiosity. Never putting people in harm's way, but she also doesn't care if the outcome hurts the people involved or not. She uses it as a behavioral study in a more strong context than with her family, whom she loves dearly.
To those she's close with, Rory is open as any of the books she has the habit of reading. Perhaps she's maybe a little too easy to read, her emotions spilling out like ink on a wet page. The floodgates open, so to speak. With such an expressive face, it's hard to hide secrets of her own and harder still not to make it obvious what she's thinking. All subtle nuances are a thing of myth when it comes to deciphering how Rory feels. She's easy to read, and something she greatly hates. As a junior at Gooseberry now, she jumped at the chance to take occlumency to see if it could translate not only to her mind but as a means to curb her expressiveness. This could be seen as either a good or bad thing, depending on the situation, but Rory will always think she would rather hold a little mystery and a few secrets of her own than be a living diary.
To those who don't know her, Rory might seem a little cold and aloof. Always happy to be alone, sitting in a corner with a good book. An odd thing from a Coppertale, but trust that she will always show her colors if challenged. She's there for a reason. While Rory prefers the shadows, she's more than capable of standing in the light with her head held high. For the things that she's passionate about, Rory would walk barefoot over hot coals and not break a sweat. She's dedicated and hardworking, something that was instilled in both Powers girls by their parents.
However, Rory quite likes to follow the beat of her own drum. A lot of her interests are considered "geeky" by muggle (no-maj) standards. LARP was the first club Rory ever joined, swiftly followed by ones that advanced or enhanced the performance of each story. Though she's not exactly the best actress, her favorite part of LARPing is seeing how the story unfolds. Were she a no-maj herself, Rory would likely delve into d&d without so much as a quibble. It scratches the itch of writing but also allows her to express herself in a different manner, allowing her to open up but stay behind a mask of her own making.
For the record, Rory's LARP character is a thief that depends on charisma and trickery.
SKILLS
LANGUAGES SPOKEN: English and a few words of Spanish. She's willing to learn languages, though.
PATRONUS: As of March 20th 2018, Rory can cast a Patronus! It's an otter.
SKILLS: Eavesdropping: She doesn't try, she promises! But somehow when she's tucked in a corner somewhere with her nose buried in a book, Rory finds herself at the juicy center of gossip. Often times she gives this information to Salem.
Academics: Both Powers girls were blessed with natural intelligence. Rory uses hers for the same reason that Vee does - to keep her grades up for the scholarship they're both on. However, if Rory ever lost hers she would be far less devastated.
Writing: It's a secret passion of hers, and perhaps the only secret of her own she's managed to keep from Vee, though their mother knows. Rory is never too far away from a notebook so she can write her story ideas in. If ever asked about what it is, she answers with "none of your business" with the assumption she's simply writing in a diary that's spelled to look like gibberish to anyone but herself.
Cooking/baking:Like her sister, Rory is a fairly decent baker. It's a sisterly bonding past time that they get in the kitchen to create confections together. Though while Vee likes making cupcakes, Rory rather likes baking cookies, pies, and experimenting with interesting blends of sweet treats. You have to try her rootbeer float bread or avacado cake. And while she enjoys baking with her sister and experimenting, she rather enjoys cooking as well. When they're home for holidays, sometimes Rory will offer to cook the night's meal so she can treat her family.
HISTORY
FAMILY MEMBERS:
MOTHER: Alessia - assistant editor for Witch Weekly.
FATHER: Patrick - Treasurer at MACUSA.
SISTER: Veronica - Senior, Ebonhide.
HISTORY:
Life in the Powers household has always been a good one. Alessia and Patrick provided well for their daughters but always taught them the value of money and the hard work it took to gain anything they wanted in life. It's why both of their daughters are responsible, respectable girls. There really aren't any sob stories about hard lives with the Powers family, either. They may not have always had the most money, but they had what they needed. It's perhaps the reason that Victoria is the way she is.
From an early age, Rory and Vee were inseparable. Best friends and sisters, however where Vee was the good girl, Rory, like many younger siblings, was the one that pushed boundaries. Usually, by instigating Vee into doing something they weren't supposed to under the guise that their parents wouldn't find out. Especially if they were sneaky about it. On more than one occasion they've snuck out to do something they weren't supposed to. Be it going alone to a playground or the nearest no-maj convenience store, the idea was usually Rory's. She's never exactly phrased it that way, though. She's just always been more into mischief and doing something to see what the outcome would be, though as she's grown the later has evolved from "I'm getting her to do what I want" to "let's see how this plays out". They've been largely successful at being sneaky, but the times they were caught Rory filed the information away for another day. She also at least felt bad for getting Vee in trouble and would make it up to her in different ways.
Vee and Victoria share some similarities, both liking to cook and both being fairly adept at whatever they put their minds to. A lot of that is thanks to their parents and their upbringing. However, that's really where a lot of the sisters' similarities end. While Vee has always had a hard time saying "no", Rory has always been the opposite. She takes on responsibility, but with caution and a lot of thought put into those decisions. She knows that you can't burn a candle at both ends and come out without consequences. She sees what Vee goes through, and while she won't tell her otherwise, she uses her as an example of how not to live. Doing too much will hurt Vee eventually, but she'll do her best to be there when she's needed. Which just highlights the sisters bond and their level of friendship.
Rory was four when she took to books and writing, after having first learning her alphabet and learning how to spell her own name. She was very proud, even going far enough to continue reading books (or try to) when neither parent had time to help her through it. That meant she leaned on Vee a little, but also made stories of her own up from the pictures. This was the start of her love for writing, and often times she would be found asking questions about what her mom was doing and what she was writing about. Some of her fondest memories are sitting on her mom's lap while having something explained to her. It gave her joy, and it also gave her the confidence to write her own little stories on paper and give them to her mom to read. It's also the one thing that was kept between them, Rory adamant about having this one thing just for them. It's still like that, now that she's 16. Her mother is the only person she trusts to know that she loves writing as much as she does and that perhaps she might one day like to become an author herself.
Reading became the one thing that Rory latched onto the hardest when Vee went off to Ilvermorny for her first year. They'd always been together and now they weren't. It was a difficult transition and something she had to work hard to come to terms with, not being able to see her best friend for long stints of time. It left her sad the first couple months, not really knowing what else to do with her time besides reading and the little bit of writing she did. The few friends she had weren't much help, either. They all reminded her that Vee wasn't there, since they shared many of the same friends in their hometown. Which was why by the time it came her turn to go to Ilvermorny, she was the most excited little muffin. Even if it was a whole new place she didn't know, she wanted to go and knew it would be okay because Vee was there. Then they were sorted into the same house, Horned Serpent, and it was a proud day.
The grades Rory got in school were outstanding, having always curiously asked questions when she didn't understand something. Never was she a know-it-all, though, often putting her brain to working something out after understanding it, and humble enough to help those around her do the same. It lead to her getting her own scholarship to Gooseberry, where she yet again followed Vee. This time it wasn't intentional. Rory had every intention of graduating from Ilvermorny, despite her parents saying it wasn't as good of a school. Until Vee told Rory that the clubs there were far more interesting than the ones at her current school, while on break from her first year. It piqued Rory's interest, and so that summer she applied to Gooseberry for an academic scholarship of her own. Fortunately, her grades were great, which lead her to getting it.
The first year at Gooseberry was spent just as quiet as the first year she went to Ilvermorny, though a lot different in other ways. She found clubs she was interested in and has been consistent with joining ones that help the club she likes the most. LARP. It has really brought her out of her shell, finding that she enjoys the physicality of things like archery and riding horses.
As a second year, this is where she really decided to get more involved. Given the wild nature of Coppertale and her own mischievous nature, being a Prefect only seemed to make sense. It best put her in a position to monitor the behavior of others (for study, mostly) but also push and pull the way that gains the most reaction. Rory isn't a bad Prefect, in fact, she's a fairly good one, but she does do things her own way. Guiding her fellow students by gentle suggestion rather than enforcing rules. Words are always better than force, in her humble opinion.
SCHOOL
YEAR: Junior
HOUSE: Coppertale
SORTING: For Victoria there was never any contest, she was always going to be a coppertale. Despite her mostly quiet demenor, she exhibits all of the qualities to a T and they're visible in her day-to-day life.
WAND: 11 inch ebony wood with Snallygaster heartstring core.
FAMILIAR: Maine Coon named Arlo. She thought she was getting a full grown cat until he grew more.
CLASSES: Charms
History of Magic
Potions
Transfiguration
Aesthetic Magic
Astronomy
Defense Against the Dark Arts
Wizard Literature
ADVANCED STUDY: Occlumency. With Rory's poor control over her emotions (she's easy to read), she decided that she would take occlumency with the hope that it would translate from thoughts to visual. So far not so good, but she's shown an apptitude for keeping her thoughts to herself when she tries.
SENIOR PROJECT: She'll decide in her senior year.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Victoria does fairly well and has little issue with any of her classes, if only because she puts conscious effort into keeping her grades high. Her best class is History of Magic, closely followed by Astronomy. The most difficult classes for Victoria are Occlumency and Wizard Literature. Occlumency for the fact she sometimes has a hard time focusing on hiding her thoughts, and Wizard Literature because some of the literature they're made to read isn't intersting to her in the least.
EXTRACURRICULARS: LARP
Archery
Equestrian
Dueling and Fencing
